Joy Of Reading is a volunteer driven non-profit organization, sharing our passion for books and literacy with the children of India. We believe reading enhances children’s social and academic consciousness and encourages them to take up independent book reading for lifelong learning and enjoyment.
The initiative was started in 2010 by Madhu Gadde, who currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Through key partnerships with Indian non-profit organizations, we have set up free libraries at community centers and schools. Books are circulated in batches of 400 every 6 months so the children get a fresh set of reading materials on a regular basis.
Children also benefit from our walk-in libraries such as the Secret Garden in Hyderabad. Books are available to read in the library. Or, for a small membership fee, children can check out books to take home.
Since inception in 2010, we have started 25 libraries in partnership with 12 partners across multiple cities and villages in India. Today, we have over 10,000 books in circulation and that have been read by over 8,000 children.
Through our JoyConnect program, we engage volunteers from colleges and corporations for book-reading sessions, who also share their joy of reading with the children.
